Biography

The artist Jonathan, alias Robert Windmuller, was born in Israel on June 11, 1943, and is working in Cologne at present.

He studied sculpture and environment design at the „Rietveld Academy“ at Amsterdam from 1968 to 1971.

From 1974 to 1978, he was invited to teach at the „Bezal'el Academy of Art and Design“ at Jerusalem.

The artistic development of Jonathan can be outlined by taking the determinant impressions of specifically israeli landscape – on which his inventory of forms and his preference for certain materials are based – as a point of departure.

While from the 1970's to the 1990's Jonathan concentrated mainly on the field of environment design – integrating sculptures harmoniously into the natural topography, and later moving on to modeling landscapes with earth –, since the late 1990's, he started applying these materials onto canvas, creating topographies of his own. As additional element, he introduced hebrew writing – mainly passages from Solomon's Song of Songs – to his works, making them an integral part of the landscape. It is this writing that established the expression 'calligraphy' for his works.
